Measuring What Matters: The Impact of CSR on Business

As part of its Annual Conference, on March 25th 2025, the Academy of Givers hosted a compelling workshop led by Mark Azzopardi, Sustainability Consultant at PwC Malta and Founder of Working Town.

The session, titled Measuring What Matters: The Impact of CSR on Business, explored the strategic advantages of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and how businesses can measure their return on investment.

While CSR is fundamentally about making a positive impact on society, the workshop emphasised that it also presents a strategic business advantage. Companies that effectively integrate CSR into their operations can enhance their brand reputation, employee well-being, environmental sustainability, and ethical supply chains—all of which contribute to long-term success.

A common question that often arises in discussions about CSR is "How can businesses effectively measure the impact of their CSR initiatives?". Azzopardi guided participants through real-world scenarios and practical methodologies for tracking CSR impact. Key discussion points included:

  • Environmental Sustainability: Measuring carbon footprint reductions, energy efficiency improvements, and waste management effectiveness.
  • Employee Well-being: Assessing employee satisfaction, engagement, and retention as indicators of a positive workplace culture.
  • Ethical Supply Chains: Ensuring fair labor practices, responsible sourcing, and supplier accountability.
  • Brand Reputation: Evaluating consumer trust, customer loyalty, and the effect of CSR initiatives on business growth.

The workshop encouraged interactive discussions, allowing attendees to share their own experiences and challenges in tracking CSR success. Participants gained valuable insights into how data-driven approaches can strengthen their CSR strategies, ensuring that efforts are not only meaningful but also measurable.

One of the session's key takeaways was that CSR should not be viewed as an expense but as an investment. Companies that prioritise sustainable and responsible business practices position themselves as industry leaders, attracting conscious consumers, top talent, and potential investors.
